President's Message from David Atkins, PA-C

The future of medicine is ever-changing and the PA profession is certainly not immune.  Currently, the Physician Assistant National Recertifying Exam (PANRE) is considered a generalist exam to test the basic medical knowledge of PAs.  However, the NCCPA is in the process of adopting a new re-certification model for PAs.  Dramatic changes have been suggested with the proposed model, including more frequent testing and an emphasis on specialty-specific exams.  There has been significant debate about this, including the question as to whether a re-certification exam truly improves the quality of patient care.  Arguments for and against a new re-certification model have been swift and resounding from all facets of PA practice, along with calls for a measured, evidence-based approach in testing provider knowledge.  As the AAPA and NCCPA publicly tackle the division caused from disagreement on this issue, state PA chapters strive to stay informed and respond with the will of their members.

The Idaho Academy of Physician Assistants (IAPA) is your representation at the state and national level, working to help establish effective and non-restrictive practice laws while maximizing patient safety and access to care.  We can only effectively represent the interests of PAs in Idaho if we hear from our members.  I encourage you to reach out to myself and the IAPA Board of Directors at any time with your questions, concerns, and opinions.  Even better, volunteer to serve in a variety of leadership positions throughout Idaho to help make a significant, positive impact on the future of PAs in the state.  I am honored by the opportunity to serve as your 2016-2017 IAPA President, and hope in the coming year together we’ll continue to strengthen the IAPA and PA profession in Idaho.

Please educate yourself about this essential issue. You can visit the AAPA and the NCCPA websites for further details. Then, we need you to email the IAPA Board to share your opinion. We want to stand as the collective voice for Idaho PAs and without your input we will be unable to complete that mission. Please remember these issues may affect your ability to practice medicine, so please let your voice be heard.
