President's Message from Stephanie Roberts, PA-C

It has been referred to as a "seismic shift in the PA profession.” Those are powerful words the AAPA recently used to describe the re-certification proposal set forth by the NCCPA. The NCCPA is currently in the process of adopting a new re-certification model. Previously, the PANRE was considered a generalist exam to test the “basic” knowledge of PAs. Over the years there has been cries from many specialist PAs that it is an unfair exam and it poses a costly barrier to patient care. Many claim that it does not apply to what they do in “the real world.” Currently about 73% of PAs practice in a specialty field other than primary care. The new proposal would allow for testing in a specialty area, ie Family Practice, Emergency Medicine, Surgery. There has been significant debate about the new proposal including the basic question: “Does a re-certification exam improve quality of patient care?” The IAPA Board recently met to discuss this current issue. Many opinions were shared and no conclusion about where to stand as an organization came from the meeting. We are in need of your input! What are your thoughts and feeling about the current proposal by the NCCPA? Do you even know that this issue is currently being discussed? Your ability to practice as a PA may be put to the test. Several states including Idaho require you to maintain your certification to practice medicine.

Please educate yourself about this essential issue. You can visit the AAPA and the NCCPA websites for further details. Then, we need you to email the IAPA Board to share your opinion. We are planning to put together a “quick and dirty” fact sheet about the proposal and send it out in conjunction with a survey. Please take the time out of your busy schedule to complete the survey so that we can feel pulse of the PAs in Idaho. We want to stand as the collective voice for Idaho PAs and without your input we will be unable to complete that mission. Please remember that this “seismic shift” may affect your ability to practice medicine so let your voice be heard.
